The painting is based on the myth of the Gorgon Medusa. A sweet girl who served in the temple of the goddess Athena was raped by Poseidon. He came to the temple many times and looked for a meeting with her. But the girl refused him every time, because she chose to serve in the temple. The picture shows the moment of this event. Snakes crawl out of the head of the Gorgon , these are her thoughts, and later, we know that she was always depicted with snakes. After this incident, Gorgon asked for help from Athena and she tried to protect her constantly insisted on punishment for Poseidon. But Zeus could not do anything in this case. Gorgon left from the temple of Athena. And she began to live in loneliness. She killed the men who wanted to approach her with her gaze, they all turned into stones.
She was killed by Perseus. The sea jellyfish got its name because of its resemblance to the moving hair-snakes of the legendary gorgon Medusa from Greek mythology.
